To the Chairman of Quarter Sessions, Northallerton,

I beg to offer myself as a candidate for the office of Clerk of the Works for the North Riding, and in support of my application, I beg to refer you to the testimonials which accompany this letter.

It is not only the manner in which I have discharged my duties, but my public character in general, that I wish to bring to your attention, and if such should be found satisfactory, and you should be pleased to appoint me as Clerk of Works, it will issue great satisfaction to me, and be my constant endeavour to obtain the same measure of approbation that it has been my good fortune to secure from my present and former employers.

I have, &c.,

William Danby.

FROM EDWARD FILLITER, Esq., M.I.C.E. and F.G.S., &c.

LEEDS CORPORATION WATERWORKS, ENGINEER'S OFFICE, 16, EAST PARADE, LEEDS, 3rd August, 1872.

To the Chairman of Quarter Sessions, Northallerton,

SIR,

I have pleasure in recommending my principal assistant, MR. WILLIAM DANBY, for the post of Surveyor of Bridges of the North Riding.

He has been in my service for about 14 years (four years as a pupil, and ten years as an assistant), and is now engaged for me in setting out and assisting to superintend the construction of some large Reservoirs for the Leeds Waterworks, in the Valley of the River Washburn.

In these works, he has had to supervise large buildings, and the diversion of Roads, as well as the more difficult operations involved in making heavy embankments to hold water.

He also assisted me, at a former period, in making additions to the Leeds Borough Gaol, and in building Police Stations in Leeds.

He is a very neat and quick draughtsman, and a practical Surveyor, and is accustomed to keep accounts of works in progress, and maintain a check upon contractors and workmen.

He is steady in his habits and perseveringly executes all work entrusted to him. Should the Justices elect him, they will find him at all times most desirous to discharge effectively the duties that may fall upon him.

I have the honour to be,

Sir,

Your obedient Servant,

EDWARD FILLITER.
